If you’re looking for a memorable family getaway before summer ends or a cozy fall weekend escape, Harrisonburg, Virginia is worth the trip. This small town sits in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, about two hours from Washington, D.C. It’s full of charm, family adventures, and plenty of ways to have fun without stretching your budget.

Harrisonburg is known for James Madison University, but the town offers so much more. You’ll find hands-on children’s museums, creative scavenger hunts, peaceful botanical gardens, and outdoor adventures that bring families together.

If you want to cool off with the kids, check out the new splash park at Ralph Sampson Park. It’s a great place to beat the heat and have fun without spending a dime.

We spent four days exploring everything Harrisonburg has to offer. This guide covers the activities, attractions, and special moments that made our trip one to remember. Whether you’re traveling with toddlers, teens, or both, this small town offers something for everyone.

Day 1: Arrive and Eat Like a Local in Harrisonburg

Head to Harrisonburg, Virginia  – Get on the road early and enjoy the scenic morning drive to Harrisonburg.

Your First Stop: Hardesty-Higgins Visitor Center

The Hardesty-Higgins Visitor Center is your go-to spot for everything Harrisonburg. Pick up maps, brochures, and vouchers, and chat with friendly staff about local lodging, dining, and events. Explore the on-site Valley Turnpike Museum and Civil War Orientation Center—both free and perfect for history buffs. Don’t miss the Rocktown Gift Shoppe and Heritage Bakery Café for local crafts and tasty snacks. It’s also a great place to freshen up, use the restroom, and grab a quick bite before you start your adventure.

After a fun time at the children’s museum, it’s time to check in to your cottage. Just an easy 8-minute drive away, you can settle in your own cottage or a room in the historic house depending on your accommodation choice. We stayed in the cozy Sugar Maple Suite in the Main House, a comfortable two-bedroom space perfect for a family of five. The inn also offers private cottages and luxury suites, making it a fantastic option if you’re looking for a quiet and welcoming place to stay in Harrisonburg.
