Open daily from dawn to dusk with free admission, the Arboretum invites visitors to explore over three miles of scenic paths and lush green spaces. With parking conveniently available at the Arboretum lots and JMU Lot R5 near the Atlantic Union Bank Center, it’s easy to spend an afternoon immersed in nature.
A Springtime Symphony of Wildflowers
April brings a burst of color to the Arboretum with 50 species of wildflowers blooming throughout the month and many more continuing into the season. Keep an eye out for native favorites such as Virginia bluebells, bloodroot, trout lily, spring beauty, wild larkspur, true geranium, toad trillium, and other trillium varieties. These delicate blooms create a picturesque setting for nature lovers and photographers alike.
Family Adventures and Hidden Treasures
For families, the At Home in the Woods Family Garden offers an engaging space where kids can run, play, and discover nature. Be sure to find the stone bridge and the 6-foot-tall troll, both perfect for photos and imaginative play. Ducks paddling in the pond add an extra touch of charm to your springtime adventure.
The StoryWalk® trail developed by the Design Build Dukes and Arboretum staff, combines reading and nature exploration. Children can enjoy seasonal stories along the trail, leading to a cozy reading roost with inviting spots to curl up with a book.
